Conventions of a magazine

Conventions

All magazines use different conventions to make the magazine more appealing to us as an audience. Conventions are expected and predictable signs that we read and that create expectations in the audience.

Throughout the magazines that I have analysed there are similar conventions to help us as the readers. One of the main conventions of the magazines are the mastheads. In both the magazines that I have analysed the mastheads are large and clear, this shows us what the magazine is about and what we can expect to be in it. The “secondary teacher” masthead shows us that the magazine is aimed at current or future teachers. The masthead is big and bold which grabs the attention of potential readers and gets them interested. It is in a blue colour which contrasts against the white in the background and stands out.

Another convention in both of the magazines is the large photos put on the front cover. In the splash there is one dominant photo which catches our attention. The photo contains all the ideas and the ideology of the magazine. It shows what the magazine is trying to portray to the audience. On both of the magazines large photos dominate the front cover and show us what the magazine is about. In the secondary teachers magazine we can see the two boys reading and learning. This immediately tells us that the magazine is about teaching and learning, so we have an immediate response to the magazine. This is similar to the second magazine I analysed. Once again we immediately have a response to the magazine and know what it is about. We understand the ideology of the magazine and interests us.
